Signs to look for in a great violin teacher

When beginning a new hobby, whether it be taking on a musical instrument, or craft – there are a few things you need to look out for if you want to get the best possible experience out of it. For instance, you may be new to the violin or wanting to progress further, but there are a couple of signs and indications that may tell you to enlist the help of a teacher before you really dive into the field.

 

However, finding the perfect tutor is half the challenge, and will ultimately determine your overall journey with the hobby. More importantly, learning the violin takes practice, patience and above all, persistence. A great teacher can either assist you in these regards or prohibit you from taking your skill to the next level. So, here are a few signs to look out for when choosing who to get lessons from.

 

  1. They should be enthusiastic and positive

 

Enthusiasm is number one on our list. When in the midst of a lesson, you want your teacher to be upbeat, supportive and motivating – all of which are traits that will help you progress. It’s also important to understand that these can also make the difference between you sticking out your new hobby, or giving it up quickly.  

 

  1. They adopt effective techniques and methods

 

Good technique is essential when learning the violin (or any instrument). So that being said, your teacher should be able to demonstrate the most appropriate tactic, according to your skill level. They’ll also need to be aware of how you learn best and tailor a program that’s best suited to all of this.

 

  1. They have lots of resources handy

 

Access to a range of materials is a great way to learn new and different things, no matter the craft. Come exam time (if you have them) you’ll need plenty of resources or information that can help you improve your skills and understanding. Fundamentally, this will provide you with the foundation you need to go that one step further.

 

           

  1. They have a wide knowledge base

 

Being able to fix your mistakes and understanding what’s holding your back is where a good teacher really comes into play. And all of that comes down to their established knowledge and insights. If they don’t have a firm grasp on all of this, they won’t be able to highlight areas of improvement in your own journey.

 

  1. Personalities matter

 

Sometimes you meet people that you just don’t get along with. You will have a much harder time enjoying your hobby if your teacher is one of these people.  Ensure you’re able to get off on the right foot before getting in too deep.
